eCampus provides comprehensive support for faculty to design and develop high-quality undergraduate and graduate online courses.
Faculty interested in developing online courses without the support of eCampus are encouraged to review our Self-Guided Online Course Design and Development article.
Important Documents and Requirements
The following documents and requirements are referenced throughout the comprehensive support request process. Please review prior to submitting support requests.
Faculty Agreements and Compensation
The UConn/AAUP Collective Bargaining Agreement, July 1, 2025 – June 30, 2029 defines compensation terms and intellectual property rights for online course development and teaching when faculty are paid to develop courses:
- Article 39. Compensation for the Development of Credit-bearing Online Courses
- Appendix C. Online Credit Course Development and Intellectual Property Agreement
- Appendix D. Online Credit-bearing Course Development and Intellectual Property Agreement for Adjunct Faculty
Review these sections in the UConn/AAUP Collective Bargaining Agreement excerpt – Article 39 and related appendices.
The comprehensive paid support model outlined on this page is available for all faculty members represented by the AAUP including Adjunct Faculty and In Residence. Members of UCPEA or Management Exempt staff are not currently eligible for compensation. Contact eCampus with questions.
For funded course projects, payment is made to faculty at a rate of $2750 per credit upon successful completion of course design and development.
Faculty Requirements for Comprehensive Support
The comprehensive course design and development process requires faculty to:
- Engage in the instructional design process.
- Complete a Course Design Plan approved by the program lead and/or department head.
- Conduct a Quality Matters (QM) self-review of the course and meet all essential 3-point QM standards, as determined by eCampus staff.
- Describe your plan to meet Regular and Substantive Interaction (RSI) requirements, which align with QM Specific Review Standard 5.3.
- Complete the eCampus Accessibility Checklist and meet all required items, as determined by eCampus staff.
- Submit a Student Authentication Plan.
Courses Eligible for Comprehensive Support
eCampus provides comprehensive support for courses that will be offered as Online Asynchronous (OA) or Online Blended (OB) modalities. Additionally, graduate and undergraduate courses each have their own eligibility criteria.
Faculty interested in consultation support for developing other course modalities (e.g., Online Synchronous [OS]) should contact eCampus directly.
Graduate Courses
eCampus supports development of online (OA or OB) graduate courses that meet the following criteria:
- The course is part of an existing or pending fully online graduate degree or certificate program.
Undergraduate Courses
eCampus supports development of online (OA or OB) undergraduate courses that meet both of the following criteria:
- After working with eCampus, the course will first be offered online in Summer or Winter Session.
- The course expands undergraduate learning opportunities by meeting the prioritization criteria outlined in the following section.
Priority Areas for Summer 2027
This year, eCampus and the Office of Summer and Winter Programs—working with the Common Curriculum Committee—are prioritizing proposals for a specific subset of Common Curriculum (CC) undergraduate courses that meet the following criteria:
Top Priority
Courses must meet criteria 1–3 to be considered. Courses that also meet criterion 4 will receive additional priority.
- Common Curriculum (CC) Courses not yet developed in collaboration with eCampus for online delivery.
- CC Courses that the department commits to offering annually in revenue-generating Summer/Winter sessions until cumulative enrollment reaches at least 175.
- CC Courses with consistently strong fall/spring enrollment patterns that predict positive summer enrollments.
- CC Courses that will integrate NACE Career Competencies in collaboration with the Center for Career Readiness and Life Skills.
Secondary Priority
Pending available course development funds, courses meeting the most criteria will also be considered for Secondary Priority:
- Non-CC Gen Ed courses with strong enrollment that were previously developed with eCampus and require major revision to align with new Common Curriculum. Course must have a total enrollment of at least 175 across revenue-generating Summer/Winter sessions since first offering.
- Non-CC courses with enrollment patterns suggesting positive summer demand.
- Non-CC courses that serve a strategic priority for departments, schools/colleges, or University initiatives.
- Non-CC courses that will integrate NACE Career Competencies in collaboration with the Center for Career Readiness and Life Skills.
